The Land of the Lakes

Typical features of this region: lots of water of course, with lakes, rivers and springs, many winding paths, steep slopes and deep forests. But also picturesque villages such as Couvin and Lompret.

Are you looking for a surprising piece of untouched nature? Then the Viroin-Hermeton nature park is a must. Here you walk through a relatively unknown nature reserve.
The limestone sources of the "Fondry des Chiens" make this region an absolute must to visit.
For historical highlights and cultural heritage you should go to the princely city of Chimay, where you can also taste one of our Belgian Trappist beers.
Rent a whisper boat in the picturesque village of Nismes, and cross the rivers Eau Noire and Eau Blanche.
Don't have enough water yet? Then go to the largest lakes in Belgium, the lakes of Eau d'Heure. This impressive nature and recreation area includes 5 lakes that are located in a beautiful nature reserve with 600ha of forests and 600ha of meadows. An ideal destination for a fun weekend full of fascinating excursions in the middle of nature. Cycling, walking, sports and culture, there is something for everyone.

  • The Caves of Neptune in Petigny

  • The limestone hills Fondry des Chiens in the Viroin-Hermeton Nature Park

  • The archaeological museum village of Treignes , where you can visit 4 different and completely different museums

  • The water gardens Les Jardins d'O in Nismes, where you can take in the surroundings aboard a whisper boat

  • The Lakes of Eau d'Heure : the largest lake area in Belgium where, in addition to walking and swimming, you can also go karting, diving, windsurfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, mountain biking and sailing. There is even an adventure park with a climbing course (Naturaparc) if you also like to get off the ground!

  • Be sure to visit the La Plate Taille dam, the largest of all the lakes

  • A little further north of the region, about 20 minutes from the Lakes, you will find the only Belgian distillery of fruit brandy. All Belgian spirits are distilled here according to the rules of the art

  • The tastiest home-made bagels and brownies can be found in the lunch shop Une Faim de Lou', in Chimay. The owner bakes new delicacies every day, always according to the season!

  • La Bonne Auberge , family restaurant in Virelles that gives typical dishes a nice twist

  • In Beaumont, Solbreux bakery for fresh pies, croissants and again... the macarons

  • A refined but rather expensive restaurant idyllically situated on the Lakes of l'Eau d'Heures is Le Tri Marrants. 

  • Brasserie Escaillone: ​​artisanal method following ancestral techniques. Possibility to go fishing with tasting around the pond.
